Hornsea Golf Club

Hornsea Golf Club Pro-am | Yorkshire PGA

Hornsea Golf Club are holding a Golf Pro-Am on Sunday 17th June 2012. The event is in conjuction with the Yorkshire PGA and has been sponsored by      Longbeach Leisure

The competition follows our successful event last year, but is now being held on a Sunday, which makes it a lot easier to fit in with work commitments. The entry is held at £210 to include a meal and hospitality. Our course received nothing but compliments from last years players and Pro’s and this year throws up some different challenges. As part of our ongoing course improvement programme, the 1st and 18th holes have been completely re-bunkered. We have always regarded our finishing holes as amongst the best in Yorkshire and our new look 18th has made this even more the case. There are some photos in our gallery of the work taking place at the end of last year.

Thursday 26th January saw the re-start of the Hull and District Alliance. The first event of 2012 was held at Withernsea Golf Club. It was a very wet and dark start to the day but the Hornsea pairing of David Close and Tony Close must have enjoyed the conditions that improved as the day went on. Captain’s Drive In

On New Year’s Day, the new captain of Hornsea Golf Club, Steve Robinson, was presented with his Club jacket and club captain’s tie by the retiring captain, Paul Lockwood.

A large crowd of members assembled on the first tee to watch as Steve Robinson started his captain’s year off in fine style. Dressed as a school boy, in recognition of his recent
retirement from 55 years in education, some of which was spent as a schoolboy, he amazed his regular playing partners by sending ball after ball up the centre of the 1st fairway.

The occasional trick ball, exploding ball and unusual clubs provided by the club Professional, Stretton Wright, did nothing to disturb the regularity of his swing. The vice
captain, Lindsay Ward, organised a firework display at the same time as members and guests let off party poppers.

Fellow members, standing on the fairway, tried to find the lucky ball; Andy Kelly was successful and was presented with a bottle of whisky later in the bar. Andy, unusually for golfers does not like whisky, so he kindly donated it back to the members; who responded to this generous gesture by drinking to the Captain’s good health and good golfing, during his year of office.
Members and guests returned to the bar where they continued the celebrations with the traditional first drink of the year being provided by the new Captain.

Further Photographs will be published in our Photo Gallery. (Photos Ray McKie)

Captain’s Drive In – New Years Day

Tuesday Golfers Challenge

Today saw a challenge between the two distinct groups of golfers who play in their own groups each Tuesday. The “Tuesday Boys” headed by John Clayton today, and the “Tuesday Afternooners” today led by Tony Hood.  Club Chairman Keith Gorton proposed the challenge which was an am-am format, with the four best scores from each side to count. On a fine but very windy day, there was some very good scoring from both sides and the “Tuesday Afternooners” managed a win by a narrow margin of two shots on the combined scores.  Mulled wine and a light meal was enjoyed by all in the clubhouse afterwards.

Course Improvements are underway

Following the opening up of the view down the 5th hole at Hornsea Golf Club, work is now well underway on the 18th hole. Plans for the work have been on view in the clubhouse for some time, but for me anyway, it was difficult to visualise the scale of the work involved. Having watched some of the work being done over the last couple of days, I am certainly impressed with the level of skill involved and being used. The bunkers around the 18th and the surround to the green have now all been re-shaped, and turfing is in process as I write. Many thanks to Martin Varley of Longbeach Leisure for allowing us the use of some of his land for growing the new turf.

There will be a selection of photographs (courtesy of Stretton) in our Photo Gallery, as the work progresses.

Important Safety Reminder

Following the recent court case involving a golfer who was seriously injured by a stray shot, at  a course in West Lothian, which resulted in damages of £400,000 being awarded to the claimant (70% payable by the golfer, 30% by the club) all golfers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure they have adequate insurance cover for such an accident.

Some household insurance policies offer this cover otherwise there are ‘golfers policies’ available from a variety of companies to cover these eventualities.

In any event, all golfers are reminded to excercise care when playing, pay attention to advisory notices and to take all reasonable steps to prevent injury to other persons on the golf courses and their surrounds.

Changes to the 5th Hole

Those of you that have played at Hornsea this week will have seen the work that has been going on at the 5th hole. The removal of the hedge really has made a big difference. I for one think it is a great improvement. A big well done to our greens staff for a great job.

Hull and District Alliance Hessle Golf Club 3rd Nov 2011

The 3rd of November saw a shot gun start to the final Hull and District Alliance of 2011 before the winter break. Hessle Golf Course was in fantastic condition for the time of year and I am sure that all who played enjoyed a great course. Greens still have me, and I’m sure a few others, baffled though!! A fantastic score of 62 from a pair from Hull Golf Club won the event by 2 shot. Hornsea’s best score of the day was from Andrew Dickinson and Stretton Wright (Club Professional) who’s 67 see Hornsea still in a comanding lead in the Victor Hurdle Cup. Hornsea are now 5 shots clear of Cave Castle. The season starts again at Withersea on January 26th. I hope we get the continued support from all players wanting to play, but the team picked will go on form and previous results. We had 28 names down for 12 places at Hessle which is great, but I know some people will not always get a game.

Hornsea Golf Club Seniors Invitational Day

Hornsea Golf Club held it’s Seniors Invitational Day on Wednesday 19th October. The day was well supported, with 70 teams heading to Hornsea from as far afield as Scarborough and Allerthorpe in the North, to Market Rasen in the South.

Fortunately the weather was fine and so a good day was had by all, scores submitted proved this. The course was in an excellent condition and thanks go to Gareth and his team for this.

Also thanks to the Ladies Section for serving refreshments at The Halfway House, they were much appreciated by all.

Not forgetting my fellow Senior members who helped to facilitate the day and to everyone who took part and made our Invitational Day such a success this year.

Thursday 6th October saw 16 Hornsea members battling wind, rain and the coldest temperatures of the year in the Hull and District Alliance at Cave Castle. All but one of our pairs seemed to struggle, but a fantastic score of 67 by Mark Cooke and Adrian Bird, saw Hornsea still in front in the Victor Hurdle Cup. It leaves us 4 shots clear of Cave Castle and 8 in front of 3 other clubs. Very well played boys. Not a bad score with a 8/7 on your card!!  Best score of the day was 66 by Cave Castle and Hessle. Lady Captain’s Report September 2011

Our last friendly match this season was against Cottingham, which was enjoyed by all although Hornsea lost.

A good fun Captains/Lady Captain’s mixed comp resulted in a win by Greta Pearson & Adrian Foord.

55 of us travelled to Scarborough South Cliff for our Exchange Day.The winning team being Sue Robinson, Judith Thornton, Ann Moore and Lorner Porter.

Liz Wrigglesworth won the Lady Presidents Rose Bowl. Thank you Patsy for officiating the day, £200 was generously donated in memory of Betty Smith which I have forwarded to  Yorkshire Cancer Research. On the same day at Scarcroft, Carole Perry and myself were delightad to come 4th in the final of the County Foursomes.

Another acheivement this month was a hole in one by Sheila Egerton at Flamborough.

We had a successful and well supported Invitation Day. Once again many thanks ladies for providing cakes for the half way house, which was efficiently manned by Terry Clappison & Frank Palin. Rosie Atkin, Sylvia Charter, and their guests were the winning team.

10 couples turned out to play the mixed friendly against Brough but torrential rain resulted in an early finish and hence an honourable draw.

Lastly this month the final of the Anne & Sam was played, Terry & Myself were defeated by very worthy winners, Myra & Colin Smith

Lady Captain’s Report August 2011

A memorial service has been held for Bob Leonard who died two weeks ago, and on behalf of the Ladies Section, I would like to express our sympathy to Sue for her sad loss.

The golf since our last meeting started with a successful Ladies Past Captain’s competition, which was won by Rosemary Turner, the runner up being Sylvia Charter. The Scratch Cup was played over 36 holes and was won by Angela Clappison from Rosie Atkin and the Bronze Salver which is played on the same day was won by Anne Merritt.

The mixed friendly held at Ganstead was really enjoyed, even though Hornsea lost and likewise the return Ladies friendly match at Scarthingwell.

Thirty Nine teams played in our open Am Am in good weather and course conditions resulting in Elsham returning a 17 under par winning score. Well done to the two Hornsea teams who came in 4th and 6th positions. Thank you to all who helped on the day and especially to Sue Robinson for all her hard work organising the competition.

The ladies, as well as donating the food, very kindly ran the halfway house for the Junior Fundraising Am Am on Friday 5th August. The Junior organiser Glen Darnell thanked everyone who contributed. It was greatly appreciated and over £1700 was raised for their section.

Hornsea Golf Club Junior Fundraising Am Am

Hornsea Golf Club held an Am Am on the 5th July 2011 in aid of raising money for the Juniors at Hornsea. It was a fantastic day and the course yet again was in fantastic condition. All players where met on the 1st tee by 2 of the juniors, Nathan and James, who hopefully got all players off to a good start by hitting the 1st tee shots. A big thanks go to our Lady Captain Angela for sorting and looking after the Halfway House, and to all the lady members for providing a wonderful spread of food. In total, the amount raised was just over £1770.00 which is fantastic. Thankyou to all who played and donated.

Lady Captain’s Report 12th July

The team matches are now complete. The Scatch Team, after gaining promotion last year, have struggled this season without success. The A Team have had better results, winning 2 matches and likewise the B Team, my thanks go to the Captains Lorna Porter and Patsy Yeates and also to all team players who have represented the club.

Two couples have qualified for the Yorkshire Foursomes County Finals at Scarcroft, well done to Rosie Atkin and Jan Jackson and to Carole Perry and myself!

Thank you Sue Robinson for all your excellent organisation of the Over 50′s Am Am. Unfortunately the winning team on the day from Grimsby had to be disqualified for fielding 2 under age players. The results are now as follows: 1st Northcliffe/Shipley, 2nd Driffield, 3rd, 4th, 5th places went to Hornsea and in 6th place Ganton.

My Lady Captain’s Mixed was held on the hottest day of the year so far, my lively family  did not seem to put players off their golf as the good scores reflect. Mary Smith and Peter Blood took 1st prize (44pts), Myra & Colin Smith were 2nd on the back 9 (43pts)  from Cath Caley and Howard Palmer. The June Malin Trophy for best nett was won by Sylvia Charter (73) on my Lady Captain’s Day. My thanks go to everyone for their support & generosity with their donations on both days, and I was overwhelmed with all my cards and gifts.

Scarthingwell enjoyed a winning visit to Hornsea in a friendly match and at the Driffield Open Am Am , Mary Smith, Rosie Atkin, Ruth Scott and Sheila Egerton came 4th.

Our thanks go to Paul Lockwood for organising such a successful Captain’s Weekend. The winning Ladies Team on Sunday was Anne Merritt, Greta Pearson, Cathy Gorton and Patsy Yeates.

Two Hole in Ones – Sat 25th June

For the second time in just over two weeks we have had two hole in ones on the same day. This time both were on the 17th and came from Graham Lee and Richard Charter. Congratulations go to both players.

Captain’s 72-hole Marathon

On Tuesday 21st June, Hornsea Golf Club Captain Paul lockwood completed his 72 hole Challenge in aid of the Everyman Charity.

Starting at 4.30a.m., Paul completed 4 rounds of golf on foot, finishing every hole by putting out – and retrieving the ball from the hole himself! He even kept a score card going!

Aided by his caddies, Lady Captain Angela Clappison and her husband Terry, Malc Train, Vice Captain Steve Robinson and Nathan Wright, Paul improved his scores throughout the day.

Starting at first light, the golf was a little slow to get going and a rather disappointing 94 was recorded. However as the rhythm of faster, one-player golf was set, the scores improved with cards of 82, a day’s best of 78, and a final 81 with 5 dropped on the last 3 holes!! Steve Robinson won the prize for best score Caddy!

Paul would like to thank everyone for their sponsorship and donations towards the Everyman Charity which leads research into the cure and treatment of prostate and testicular cancer.

An unexpected boost was given to the fund by a generous donation by the Hornsea Lions, who hold their meetings at the golf club. Paul is looking to raise £1000 for the day. Anyone else wishing to donate can leave the money with Matt or staff at the bar, or can send to Paul Lockwood at Hornsea Golf Club.

Pictured are Paul with Lady Captain Angela Clappison, before teeing off on the first round at 4.45am! More photographs of the day will be posted on the gallery.

Scratch League

Both Hornsea teams did well this week (17th June). Hornsea A got a draw with Beverley A. Wins for Reece Brown and Lee Gawley. Hornsea B had another great win away at Cottingham, with wins for Paul Harland, Mick France and a half for Sam Middleton. This means the B team have won 3 games in a row. Very well played to all.

Lady Captain’s Report -14th June

My report starts on a cheerful note with today’s celebration of one of our past presidents, Myra Taylor’s 90th birthday.

Congratulations go to Rosie Atkin for winning the Broderick Cup, the runner up being Jan Jackson.

We are having close results in the League matches, but most unfortunately are not close enough! Success only to the A Team V Knaresborough(home) this month, but well played all.

At Opens on away courses, Sam Ward was in the winning team in the Hull Lady Captain’s Am Am and Lyndis Johns came 1st in a winning team at the Ganstead Park Am Am.

The winners of the Mixed Open on 5th June with a score of 137 in difficult conditions were Rosemary & David Turner partnered by Val & Nigel Holmes from Hessle, in 2nd Place with 140 were Hazel Conboy, Angie Hinch and Partners. Although successful the event was not so well supported as in previous years.

Thanks go to Frank Palin, assisted by Gill for organising the Past Captains Competition once again. In the Ladies winning team were, Myra Smith, Eileen Johnson, Sue Stead and Anne Merritt.

The Yorkshire Foursomes were played at Bridlington Belvedere yesterday, but until the results are published on the YLCGA web site we do not know if any of the Hornsea Ladies have qualified for the next round.

Scarborough Exchange Sun 12th June

Thirty-six Hornsea golfers travelled to Scarborough for the annual exchange. The weather forecast for the afternoon was for rain so the Fourball Betterball over 18 holes was played in the morning. Conditions were excellent and some great scores were returned.

The heavy rain arrived  during the 9 hole individual competition in the afternoon, but it did not deter Paul Lockwood and Mike Harah carrying on after the comp to complete the full 18 holes. I’m sure there was a good reason!

Hornsea Golf Club Pro-Am 13th June 2011

On June 13th, Hornsea Golf Club held its first Pro-Am for 25 years. Run in conjunction with the Yorkshire PGA and with the help of main sponsor Martin Varley from Longbeach Leisure, the day was a great success.

The course was in fantastic condition, for which a great deal of thanks go to Gareth Williams and his team for all of their hard work. Many people commented that Hornsea have some of the finest greens they have played on and that the course was superb. Conditions on the day were tough though, with a strong wind blowing all day. This made scoring very difficult but everyone who played really enjoyed the day.

The event will be repeated next year with the date still to be confirmed.

Hole in One – 3rd this week at Hornsea

Following on from two on Thursday, there has been another hole in one today. Paul Harland, playing in the 1st Division Open at Hornsea Golf Club, holed out in one at the par 3 seventh. This was the second of his golfing career. His first hole in one came only 2 weeks ago in the 1st Div open at Cottingham. Congratulations to all three players.

Two Hole in Ones – On the same afternoon

Thursday 9th June saw two players achieve a Hole in One at Hornsea Golf Club. Andy Codd was the first to hole out in one on the 7th hole. It must be getting quite expensive on the whisky front for Andy, as this was his second within a month.  Later in the afternoon Lloyd Wilkinson holed out in one at the 17th, whilst playing in the Thursday Stableford.

Incident on the 17th – Course Marshall Needed?

Word has just reached me that there was an unusual incident on the 17th hole today. A member of Hornsea Golf Club who shall remain nameless, hit a fine tee shot over the ditch at the par 3. The pressure of having a good round going in the monthly medal must have been immense. Going down the hill to cross the ditch, he allowed his powered golf trolley to go ahead of him, but it failed to negotiate the bridge. The ditch is one of the deepest on the course and the bag of clubs ended up in the bottom of it. Jonny from the Pro-Shop was agile enough to be able to rescue the clubs. Playing partners Richard Johnstone, Darren Reeve and Bill Railton were unable to assist due to being overcome with laughter.

Undeterred, our intrepid golfer managed to continue and posted a creditable nett 69.

Congratulations go to Mel Marshall on a fine score.

The “Hornsea Gutty” 2011

The “Hornsea Gutty” 2011 was held at Hornsea Golf Club in Yorkshire, on 13th May. Stretton Wright our Golf Club Professional, spoke to some of the competitors after the event and they had the following to say about the competition and golf course.

Pictured left is Hornsea Golf Club Captain Paul Lockwood presenting the “Hornsea Gutty” to 2011 winner George Forder of Fulford Golf Club.

Paul Lockwood, England international player. “Hornsea is in excellent condition for the time of year. The greens are great. Just a shame my putter was not hot today”.

Alan Wright, played over 150 games for the East Riding. “Hornsea, as always, was in good condition. The greens putted ok and the rest of the course was fine. The soup in-between rounds was also very good”.

Jamie Miller, ex professional golfer and runner up in the competition. “It is always a pleasure to come and play Hornsea. Great nick today”.

Ricky Boniface, geenkeeper. “Course is always great”.

Mat Daley, Cyprus amateur champion 2011. “Course was in very good condition. It is a little hard and bouncy, but a little rain will sort that. Overall the course is in great nick and the greens 1st thing today were mint”.

George Forder, Gutty Champion 2011. “Course was great today, but the greens where just fantastic”.

Many thanks to Martin Varley of Longbeach Leisure for sponsoring this years event.

A photo album of the event is now in our “Gallery” section.

Hornsea Gutty 13th May 2011 Results

Today saw Hornsea Golf Club host the 5th running of ‘The Hornsea Gutty’ .This is a Yorkshire Order Of Merit event which brought together 64 of Yorkshires top amateur golfers to compete in a 36 hole stroke play event. Gareth Williams (Head Greenkeeper) and his team had produced an excellent golf course to challenge the players despite very dry conditions. A fairly stong breeze was also blowing to make the task even harder as the first group tee’d off at 7.40. The best score in after the first 18 holes was posted by Adrian Rosindale with a fantastic score of 2 under par 70. The afternoon saw the wind drop a little but a few showers started to drift across the Hornsea course which dampened the spirits of some golfers, but inspired a few others. A fantastic round of 67 (5 under par) in the 2nd round by Fulford Golf Club member George Forder to add to his 76 in his first round was good enough to lift the Gutty.  This beat his fellow club member also from Fulford, Jamie Miller by 3 shots. In 3rd place was last years winner S Calvert, who was a further shot behind, and who made a great effort to defend his title.

Pictured is Hornsea Golf Club Captain Paul Lockwood presenting the “Hornsea Gutty” to winner George Forder of Fulford Golf Club.

Sky Am Am

Organiser Andy Dickinson presented Club Captain Paul Lockwood with a cheque for over £4000 after a very successful Fund-Raising ‘Sky TV’ Am Am on Sunday 17th April. 40 teams took part in the competition which was won unusually by the first team out in the morning, Rick Hewland, Dean Ralph, Steve Morrod and Dennis Jones.
The Captain thanked organisers Andy Dickinson and Mick Russell, and a host of supporters for their hard work. In particular Hayley Johnson, Karen Dickinson, Maxine Moorhouse and Rosemary Turner who kept the halfway house refreshments going all day; Yvonne Wright for her help with administration, and John Hammersley and Ray Cook for their efficient 12 hour recording and score-keeping stint!.
The money raised ensures that the refurbished Rolston Bar at Hornsea Golf Club, now open to the public, is able to show all the major sports events live on satellite TV as they happen.

The idea for the am am came about last Autumn when it seemed as if the Satellite subscription would have to go as part of the inevitable expenditure cuts being made at the club.  Andy and Mick have shown what can be done by members who are willing to put a bit of time into their club! Well done and thank you to all involved!

Ladies Group Golf Lessons

A number of lady members have just completed half, of what have now become, our annual group lessons with Stretton. What wonderful tuition this has proved to be. I personally have been to these lessons from day one and have benefited tremendously. Whilst there may be a particular subject matter, Stretton is flexible and sees what our various needs are, and so the lessons develop into all round golf instruction.

In a good social atmosphere, we learn from each other, build our confidence and come away refreshed and convinced that the next time we play we will win that elusive trophy. It goes without saying that refreshments (a coffee, or something stronger!!) are taken in the Club House afterwards. To anyone who has not yet taken advantage of these invaluable lessons, you are missing a treat. Sign up now. The group lessons are held on Wednesdays at 9.30am until May 11th. Please check full details with Stretton or myself.

East Riding Alliance results 30th March 2011

Brough and Ganstead Park share Salver.

Last week saw the East Riding & District of Yorkshire Golf Alliance President, Jonathan Baggaley host his President’s Salver at his home club, Brough. With each of the twenty six member clubs fielding three better-ball pairs and with all scores to count, the pressure was on for everyone to shoot low with no room for passengers.  After the early returns, it looked as if it was going to be Ganstead’s day, with professional David Smee and R. Knowles (12) shooting a 61 and D. Cockerham (4) and Darren Moore (6) one shot back on 62. That gave them a three shot cushion over Brough, who were counting a pair of 63s from assistant professional Oliver Cross and partner Andy Woodhead (2) and Justin Sloan (+1) and Steve Mews (5).

The pendulum then swung back in Brough’s favour, when their third counting pair of Chris Clarkson (5) and Paul Kaye (6) came in with a seven under par 61 for a team total of 187.  It was then down to Ganstead’s last pair of Ron Short (6) and P. Beadle (8) to take up the challenge and this they did shooting a 64 to enable Ganstead to match Brough’s total of 187 and ensure that the Salver was shared.  Heworth took third place five shots adrift on 192.

Clarkson and Kaye’s score of 61 proved to the best of the day, but only after a count-back over the back nine against Ganstead’s Smee and Knowles and Heworth’s newly appointed professional Fraser Kelley and his partner Andy Wright (10) by virtue of Clarkson and Kaye’s score of 29 as against 30 by the other two pairs.  After receiving his winner’s tankard, Chris Clarkson said, “Paul and I fitted well as a pair, each of us scoring on nine holes during the round.  We had a glitch on the front nine with back to back bogeys on holes 5 and 6 but after that we got into our stride and played well.  Probably the decider was when Paul chipped in on the 14th for an eagle two.  To win the tankards and then share in winning the salver is great”.

Making his last appearance as a professional in the Alliance was Grahame Fieldsend, who retired recently as the club professional at Hessle. His contribution to local golf, and in particular his support of the Alliance, was recognised at the prize presentation by the President.

With the Alliance season drawing to a close there are just two events remaining, firstly the 36 hole Alliance Championship at Hornsea on Wednesday, 13th April for players handicap Scratch to 7 and the Secretary’s Trophy (18 holes) at Filey on Wednesday, 27th April – handicap 8 to 14.

Ron Blood – Retires as Hull and District Match secretary

Thursday 24th March marked the retirement as Match Secretary of the Hull and District Golf Association, of Ron Blood. Ron is a member of Hornsea Golf Club and held the position of Match Secretary since 1999. We would like to thank Ron for all of the hard work and time he put into the position. Without people like Ron local competitive golf would not happen. Ron is succeeded by Bob Farrall of Hessle Golf Club.

To mark the occassion, Ron was presented with a gift of a flight over the member courses of the Association. Shown here is the presentation by Peter Lappin, the current President. I am hoping that Ron takes his camera with him and we are able at a future date to show some of his photographs.

East Riding Alliance at Fulford Golf Club 16th March 2011

Fulford Golf Club hosted the final round (Round 9 of 10 – Bridlington’s February alliance being a victim of the weather) of the 2010/2011 East Riding & District of Yorkshire Golf Alliance, with the Hull Daily Mail Championship Bowl at stake.  Going into the day, Hessle had a five stroke lead over holders Malton & Norton with Ganton a further shot in arrears. Home club Fulford and neighbours Heworth were some eight shots off the pace.  With two pairs from three to count, team selectors had been putting in overtime to make sure their most effective combinations were up for the challenge.  First and second in the standings were drawn together and with Hessle always having the measure of Malton & Norton, the holders for the last three years, it was left to Ganton and Fulford to mount a challenge.  Whilst both clubs reduced Hessle’s lead by two and four shots respectively, they could not catch the leaders, who at the end of the day had a four shot winning margin with a total of 1217 to Ganton & Fulford’s 1221.  Hessle’s counting pairs were Andy Greetham (6) and Trevor Hewson (9) and club vice-captain David Liversedge (5) and Brian Calam (11), both pairs posting four under scores of 68 for a total of 136.  Malton & Norton slipped back to equal fourth with Heworth on 1225.

It was a proud Hessle Club Captain, Mike Moulton, who collected the championship bowl on behalf of his team, from Alliance President, Jonathan Baggaley (Brough).  It was only the second time that Hessle had won the trophy since it was instigated in 1961 the previous occasion being 35 years ago in 1976.  In acknowledging his team’s performance Mike Moulton said, ‘This is tremendous for the club.  We have a nucleus of super golfers who this year have really produced the goods and you can be assured that now we have won this championship we will do our utmost to defend it’.

In the battle for the better ball tankards it looked for a long while that seven under par scores of 65 would win the day with four pairs locked together on this score with Hainsworth Park’s Phil Killeen (6) and Ian Winterbottom (9) just edging out Springhead Park’s Tony Hill (1) and Matt Moore (6) on the back six with 20 to 21.

However as darkness encroached Hull Golf Club’s Nick Law (7) and Andrew Cooke (11) enabled the organiser to dispense with his calculator when they posted a superb score of 63, nine under par.  Having gone to the turn in three under Law and Cooke moved up a gear and raced home in thirty strokes that included a splendid two putt birdie nett eagle for Cooke at the last when he found the green on the 480 yard hole with a drive and a crisply hit rescue wood.  A delighted Law speaking after handing in the card said, ‘We fitted well as a pair.  Andrew played really well on the back nine and his finish on eighteen was the icing on the cake.  What was the real key to our score was our play on the par fives – in all we were six under for the four par fives’.

Sharing the runner-up slot with Killeen and Winterbottom and Hill and Moore were Selby professional Nick Ludwell and Graham Greatorex and home club players Steve Blackburn and Graham Cooper.

Slow play again meant that the late starters were finishing as darkness descended with some players taking four and half hours to complete their rounds with one fourball that had been previously warned attracting a two shot penalty.

The next Alliance is the President’s Salver at Brough on Wednesday, 30th March with each member club fielding three pairs with all scores to count.

Leading Better Ball Scores:-  63 N.Law (7) & A.Cooke (11) Hull; 65 N.Ludwell (Pro) & G.Geatorex (9) Selby, S.Blackburn (6) & G.Cooper (10) Fulford, A.D.Hill (1) & M.J.Moore (6) Springhead Park, P.Killeen (6) & I.Winterbottom (9) Hainsworth Park;  66 R.Brown (3) & S.Middleton (5) Hornsea, P.Pritchard (9) & A.Cammish (13) Filey, C.R.Lupton (8) & S.Johnson (12) Ganton, P.Higo (6) & M.Gore (7) Hainsworth Park;

Open Am Am Wednesday 23rd March

It was Hornsea Golf Clubs first Open Am Am of the year today and lets hope the weather is as good for all the others. Warm and hardly a breath of wind and most golfers might even be going home with a bit of a suntan as short sleeves where definately required. Fantastic for this time of year. The course is coming on but after a few very dry weeks could now do with a little rain to help premote a little growth of grass on the greens and fairways. I hope every competitor enjoyed their day on the course and also in the clubhouse before and after. Shame only 17 teams today enjoyed such a great day. Please look under our ‘Open Events’ for details of other events going on at Hornsea throughout the year.

Lady Captain’s Report March 2011

Sadly, our Lady President Betty Smith passed away at the end of February. As well as being a loyal playing member for over 40 years, she had been a valuable committee member and for many years the Lady Secretary. She will be sadly missed by us all.

The weather has much improved and our Tuesday competitions have taken place. It was third time lucky for the Daily Mail Foursomes which was eventually played, Jean Prout and Sue Leonard were the winners and they now have a bye through to the next round. In the Mail on Sunday, Rosie Atkin, our team captain, led Hornsea to a win against Driffield, our next match in the 3rd round will be against Cottingham on March 21st.

An extremely windy day at Cave Castle in the Hull and District Alliance saw no winners for Hornsea but at Hainsworth Park Jo Roach and Jean Prout came in 4th with Patsy Yeates and Carole Perry also in the prizes. In the EYLWGA at Ganstead  the pairing of Rosemary Turner and Myra Smith came 7th but unfortunately we had no Hornsea successes at Brough .

Captain’s Log March 2011

It seems as though Spring has begun to show its face around the course at last. The sound of bird song and a glimpse of sun is a welcome change, and hopefully a little warmth will encourage growth on the fairways and greens. Here’s looking forward to better weather and a much improved course this Summer.

Competitive golf has continued through the Winter months although Hornsea results in the Hull & District have been a little inconsistent, leaving us lagging be- hind in 4th position. We did however manage a great result at Haisnsworth Park with 1st (Andy Dickinson & Adie Rosindale) and 2nd place (Stret Wright & Yours Truly). Hessle still lead the Victor Hurdle Cup by 6 shots from Ganstead. Hornsea are 10 shots behind. The last event will be held at Hull Golf Club in 2 weeks time when also at stake is the Ted Biggs Salver for the best 3 scores of the day from each club.

The Sunday morning challenges have been both entertaining and exciting with a number of very close games being settled only with last putts being interrupted by reminders of the Captain’s Charity Fund!! The battle of the Pro’s was won by Steve Uzzell partnering Mark Cooke, with a last green win that featured a left handed drive with a right handed club from the 10th tee!

It’s great to see so many members and guests supporting the social events at the club. Long may it continue.

East Riding Alliance Ganton

Golf Report – 12th March.

Fading light costs Hessle pair victory.

Last week saw Ganton Golf Club host Round 9 of this season’s East Riding & District of Yorkshire Golf Alliance with 156 golfers pitting their skills against the internationally renowned course.  On an unusually benign day for Ganton and with the 6450 yard course in excellent condition with fast and true greens it was surprising that only thirteen of the seventy eight betterball pairs bettered a score of 70 with some pairs returning scores in the eighties and beyond.   Best returns of the day were the nine under par scores posted by three pairs that required a back nine count-back to determine the winners of the tankards.  Coming out on top were Fulford’s former tour professional and current East Riding Alliance Champion, Jamie Miller (+2) and his partner Carl Tyrer (7) whose impressive back nine of 30 saw off Malton & Norton’s Yorkshire Team regular Chris Halley (+1) and partner Paul Harper (4) and Hessle’s Andy Greetham (5) and Trevor Hewson (9).   The Hessle pairs disappointment at losing out on a countback was compounded by having had to play the 18th hole in rapidly fading light when they were ten under par as dusk descended.  Slow play by matches during the earlier part of the day had impacted on the later games finishing in daylight and this unfortunately cost the Hessle pair dear when Hewson took three putts and a dropped shot on the last hole when he failed to read the subtle borrow in the gloom.

Commenting on their win Miller said, ‘We really played well as a team sharing the load and each scoring on nine holes.  Carl had birdies on holes three and six and I birdied eight and nine to get to the turn in four under.  Carl used his shots on thirteen and fifteen to post a nett eagle and a nett birdie in between which I birdied fourteen and then I finished off with a birdie on eighteen.  This was the icing on the cake and what ultimately proved to be the decider by getting us into a tie for first place.  It is always good to win but especially so on a great course like Ganton which was in super condition’.

One shot adrift in fourth place were the Bridlington duo of Steve Bennett (2) and Dean Thompson who had a truly remarkable run over three holes on the back nine.

On the par four eleventh Bennett holed a nine iron for an eagle two, then Thompson  chipped in on the par four twelfth for a birdie followed by further chip in by Thompson on the par five thirteenth for an eagle nett albatross.  Six under par on three holes and no putter required.  Home club professional Gary Brown and partner James Dowswell (5) posted a 66 to take fifth place.

With only round remaining for the Hull Daily Mail Championship Bowl Hessle benefiting considerably from the 63 posted by Greetham and Hewson have established a five shot lead (1081) over current holders and champions for the last three years Malton & Norton (1086).  Ganton (1087) have moved up from sixth to third place with Heworth (1089) who were leading having a bad day slipping back to fourth alongside Kirkbymoorside.  With Brough on 1090 these are the only six clubs that have a realistic chance of influencing the outcome of the championship that will be decided at Fulford on Wednesday, 16th March.

Captains Challenge 6th March

The Captain and Pro had their most comprehensive victory of the season so far, with an 8&6 win over Andy Kelly and Stu Pearson. Strettons round included seven birdies. Paul and Stretton must have played really well as Andy and Stu are a formidable regular partnership.

TUESDAY CLUB – starts soon

The Hornsea Golf Club Tuesday Competition starts on the 12th April. The Tuesday Club is perhaps one of the most keenly contested mid-week competitions in the club, and is played for the “Rolston Bar Trophy” and the “Snug Putter”, between April and September. Full details are below.

Pro-Am at Hornsea Golf Club

Betty Smith

I am sorry to have to inform you that Betty Smith passed away on Sunday 27th February, whilst in Hornsea Cottage Hospital. Betty was Lady President of Hornsea Golf Club.

AGM & Members Meeting – Change of Date

Would all members please note that the date of the AGM & Members Meeting has been changed. The meeting will now be held on Thursday 5th May 2011 starting at 7.30pm.

(original date was 21st April)

Hull & District Golf Association

Hornsea made up ground on leaders Hessle in the latest Hull & District match at Hainsworth Park on Thursday 10th February, with two good performances of 8 under par. (one best score to count)

Paul Lockwood and Stretton Wright posted their 63 from a morning tee time, with 31 and 32 (4 under) on each nine featuring three birdies each. This score held the top position all afternoon until the final group finished almost in darkness after a long four hour forty minute round. Adie Rosindale completed an eagle 3 on the par 5 17th, and managed a 3 in the gloom on the eighteenth with Andy Dickinson to also record a 63, but with a better back 9 (31) to win the tankards and winners’ vouchers.  Stret won the Professional’s Prize.

Presenting the prizes, President of the H&DGA Pete Lappin, commented on the problems caused to the Winter meetings by slow play, causing the last few games to finish in  the dark. A sentiment echoed by Andy Dickinson in his acceptance speech when he also congratulated his partner on his excellent round.

Hornsea remain in 4th place in the league, now ten points behind leaders Hessle.

Lady Captain’s Report January 2011

January 2011

Firstly it is with great sadness that two of our lady members passed away in December. Josie Clappison had been a playing member since 1969 and was Lady Captain in 1976, Amy Hardy joined the club in 1983 and became Lady Captain in 1991, both will be sadly missed.

The Ladies section has 3 new officials, Betty Smith is our new Lady President, Rosemary Turner has taken over as treasurer and Lyndis Johns is now the handicap secretary. Patsy Yeates is my Vice- Captain and Lorna Porter has also come onto the committee. I know all will do an excellent job in their new positions.

My drive-in was a great success with a very appropriate cricket theme owing to my many happy years spent at Hornsea Town CC watching and supporting the club and my husband Terry and two sons, Ian and Paul, all of whom have been very successful players.

Due to the weather the Alliances in December had to be cancelled, but the Hull and District at Beverley and the East Yorkshire Alliance at Fulford were played last week, unfortunately with no Hornsea success.

We would like to welcome our 5 new lady members and hope they will enjoy playing their golf at Hornsea.

As the weather has improved we are now looking forward to this years matches and competitions and a very successful year.

Angela Clappison

Hornsea Golf Club | Changes to Restrictions on Play

Change to – Restrictions on Play

Hornsea Golf Club supports the principles of the Equality Act 2010 and as such acknowledges the rights of all members to access the golf course, playing and practice areas in line with their level of membership subscription (e.g. Full playing membership; 5 Day membership.).

This statement supercedes the ‘Restrictions on Play, previously stated in the handbook and 2011 fixture list, that may seek to limit access to the course for members and visitors on account of their age or gender.

In conjunction with the Board of Directors through the delegated powers of the Golf Committee and appointed Fixtures Secretaries, the various members’ sections (Men, Ladies, Juniors, Mixed, Seniors, Over 77’s, et al) may be sanctioned to arrange and organise ‘Bona Fide’ club / open competitions, matches and events for their stated sections and guests or visiting entrants. Where these competitions are limited to the section in question by age, gender or other condition as part of the entry; and where it is agreed that the play of other golfers may disrupt the organisation or safety of the event, or cause
slow play (e.g. 4 ball groups in among a competition organised in 2 or 3 balls), the section concerned will be authorised to set aside, in advance, sufficient tee times to reasonably fulfil the needs of the stated competition, match or event. A ‘reasonable’ amount of time (no more than 30 minutes) can be provided if necessary at the end of a competition or event for health and safety reasons, to enable competing golfers to ‘get away’ from the first tee before it is opened to all sections (at the discretion of the Professional). Organisers will make every effort to ensure that the time set aside is proportionate to the number of entrants (for example 24 entrants playing in 2-balls can be reasonably expected to be limited to 90 minutes of available tee time with a short period allowed for safety following the last tee time).

Players in a ‘bona fide’ competition or event have priority on the course and should not be expected to give way to non-competitors starting at a later time or from a different starting point on the course. Similarly, those not playing in a competition must move aside when approached by any game or series of games that are part of a ‘bona fide’ match, competition or event from any section of the membership, or that forms part of a Mens’ or Ladies’ National, County, Alliance or Union sanctioned event.

Where competitions and events are under-subscribed and do not fill the times that have been set aside, the organisers will inform the golf secretaries and / or the Professional as early as possible in order to make unused or free tee-times available to other club members or visiting golfers in order to maximise the access to all players.

Wherever possible, Golf Secretaries and Professional will be given at least 28 days notice of any requests or changes to agreed fixtures by organisers, so that due notice can be given to all members of the need to set aside tee-times, or alternatively that tee-times have become available.

The Chairman on behalf of the Board of Directors

Quiz Time – Rules of Golf

For the majority of players, the rules of golf can be quite daunting. How many times have you disagreed with your playing partners over a ruling, or simply not been sure enough to agree or disagree? I know I have certainly found myself in this situation. Most players probably bow to the knowledge of a more experienced playing partner, but are they right?

Rules Quiz is an interactive way of learning the rules in a quiz format. Located on the website of The Royal and Ancient it may be a valuable resource for you.

HowDidiDo – What is it?

You may have noticed a link on our website to HowDidiDo.  For those of you who do not already use it, this is the easiest way to obtain the results of all Qualifying Competitions held at Hornsea Golf Club. One you are registered, you will receive an email giving the full competition results and new exact handicaps of each competition you enter. There is a breakdown of your round and quite a few course stats for the day. In addition to this, you can view past qualifying competitions and see how your handicap has progressed over a period of time.

Registration is easy and Free of charge.
