Captain Scarlett's Log - August 2017
19 August 2017

This month’s log is a bit late due to the fact that I’ve been away on holiday to the South of France with our family. We have been going for five years now and each time we have a new grandchild with us – this year five of them plus one eight year old from a new relationship.

We had a great time, managing to avoid the severe temperatures but not the mosquitos. We’ve never been bitten so much !!

Since my last log in early July I have thoroughly enjoyed two away days. The first one was to Scarborough North. I had never played the course before but I will definitely go back again. A lot of people said that they don’t like the first field but love the rest of the course with it’s beautiful undulating golf holes that are all different and not repetitive like some other courses are (not ours at Hornsea which are all truly individual and is one of the reasons it is the best course in the area IMO). However I liked all of Scarborough – it might be because I had a really good round that day, that always helps!

The other trip was my Captain’s away day at Easingwold. Similarly I hadn’t played there before either and although it isn’t the most challenging of courses as long as you manage to hit the ball straight, I really enjoyed playing it. My two main memories are getting a birdie on the par 5 18th which is a massive dogleg back to the clubhouse which won Stret and I the Captain’s Challenge. Even though Martin Rowbottom got a fantastic eagle on that last hole it wasn’t enough with my extra shot!

The other memory is hitting what I thought was a terrific 9 iron out of a fairway bunker which was dead on the flag only to see it suddenly disappear completely from view – I’d forgotten about the ditch that runs right in front of  the green! I’ll remember that next time, I hope!

All in all it was a terrific day, what with travelling in a luxury coach that until recently was used by Chelsea football team. That certainly helped make the day even more memorable.

The rest of this month is a lot quieter for me in golf terms as it’s greens maintenance time and there are only Captain’s invitational days at Burstwick and KP Club. It’s probably a good thing as I was getting a bit golfed out – I’d played something like 12 rounds in 16 days before I went off on holiday. Mind you it feels funny that my next round at Hornsea probably won’t be until early September. At least I’ve got time to do some practice.

Before I sign off there’s one other memory from the last month that I’d like to share with you. I was due to play golf early one Thursday morning with two other guys. It was unusually quiet that day with hardly anyone around in the car park. I went to the new toilet just inside the main door. As I tried to leave I realised that the door had shut too – I pulled the handle and it wouldn’t budge so I pulled the handle a bit harder and it came off in my hand! I was shut in! I banged on the door but no one was around. I opened the small window and shouted at the top of my voice ‘HELP” I’M LOCKED IN!’ Still nobody came to my aid. Eventually about 10 minutes later one of my playing partners came out of the pro shop to see where I was and heard me calling out. What a relief! Needless to say I didn’t have a particularly good round especially the first few holes. Although it wasn’t a great experience and I felt a bit stupid being locked in, I’m glad it happened to me as Club Captain and not to one of our visitors. The door has been sorted now.

Happy Golfing!       Captain Scarlett.
