Captain Scarlett's Log - October 2017
8 October 2017

Welcome to my October log.

I have been asked many times throughout this year whether I have enjoyed being the club captain. The short answer is yes, most definitely!  There is a longer answer that I will be addressing in my final ever Captain’s log in December. Bet you can’t wait!

Being Captain has been (and still is) an honour – representing our club in many different situations is something I have been proud to do. I have met many golfers from all over, who when they realise I am the captain of Hornsea, never fail to have a positive comment to make about playing our course or having heard what a good course it is.

The most recent person to say that was the pro at Kenwick Park where I am currently on a golfing trip with a group of us that all went to Teachers Training College 43 years ago (wow, that makes me feel old!) For the first time this year I had asked for courtesy of the course as a current captain – as I had only just realised that most clubs will honour that and allow captains to play for free.

The £65 I saved I’ll be putting in my Captain’s Charity Fund – I just wished I’d cottoned on a bit earlier then I could have played more courses and raised more money! Missed opportunity.

I did try to get courtesy of the course when playing in Scotland the week before last but the guy who had organised the tour had already negotiated discounts at the three courses we played on. I haven’t been on many golf tours yet so playing new courses is a real treat – Dunbar, Gullane and North Berwick were the ones we played, all of them stunning in their own way. North Berwick in particular was memorable as it offered amazing views of the coast and some really different feature holes.

The holes that I think I’ll always remember are the 14th which had a dry stone wall running all alongside the fairway with the very small green on the other side so that you had to hit the ball over the wall onto the green  from wherever you were; the 17th which had an enormous cavernous bunker dug into the hillside with the green on the top of the hill; the 2ND which had the most spectacular view of the beach  and the 16th which had a massively undulating green that went up then down into a hollow and up again to the flag. All of them memorable holes of course but it’s what happens on them during your round that also means they stick in your memory.

The 14th and the 17th I parred - the latter getting up and down from the huge bunker from a difficult lie (amazing for me!); the 2nd because in the group in front of us one of them hit a huge slice and they all screamed FORE as the ball flew towards a couple happily walking along the beach. Next news we saw the woman jump into the air as the ball struck her foot – it must have been very unpleasant! Don’t know if the guy had golf insurance or not but the couple weren’t very happy and made sure that he knew it. It certainly made us concentrate on our drives when we eventually hit them – all four of us aiming left!! And finally the 16th which regrettably I didn’t get to putt as I’d already lost my ball in the punishing rough. One of my playing partners was just on the green for a birdie putt of about 50 – 60 feet from the flag and had to putt down and up again through the hollow leaving it inches short and seeing it roll all the way back and to the side and then off the green completely. He finished with a 7!

I’m sure all of you that are lucky enough to go and play other courses have similar memories of special holes and special moments. It strikes me that golf is the only game I know where a group of friends of varying abilities can share so many experiences that are individual but somehow collective, if that makes sense? That’s part of what makes it such a great game.

Captain Scarlett.
