Greens News - September 2017
6 October 2017

With a break in the wet weather at the end of September, we were able to hollow core the 16th fairway (12mm tines at 25mm depth).  The plugs were then placed on the exposed mound, raked evenly and rolled to firm.  Approximately 5kg of fescue seed was cast into and mixed with the plugs.  We shall see in the next few weeks how well this method works as I am sure that this is the best way for it to blend with the fairway.

Following August’s greens renovation, recovery went well and looked set for the winter months.  Unfortunately we have had an outbreak of disease (fusarium) which could affect the greens through the winter.  It occurred when conditions were ideal for fungal activity with mild temperatures and heavy morning dews.  The greens were initially treated with liquid iron to try and desiccate the plant but we had to resort to a fungicide curative application.  Hopefully we will be able to get some growth in the next few weeks and grow out the scarring.

Aeration will continue through the winter for all surfaces. The tees have been solid tined this week with 12mm tines to a depth of 150mm.  This will aid turf recovery from the summer use and improve surface drainage.  The greens will be slit tined monthly but we shall solid tine probably at the end of October.

The baffle nets in the driving bays have been replaced as one had several holes in it and the other was showing signs of wear.  However as a request to those that use the bays; the mats should be used at all times and do not practice from the grassed area.  Thank you!

As you will have noticed leaf fall has become a constant and over the next few months one of the routine tasks will be to clear the greens and tees for daily play.  Leaf collection usually ends in early December.
