Greens News - June 2017
28 June 2017

This month we have solid tined the greens to give them some much needed air.  It has been quite a while since they were last aerated.  The benefits of which are as follows;-

  • Gas exchange CO² for O²
  • Create spacings for root development
  • Improved surface drainage

When you consider the footfall, rolling and regular mowing then this can lead to surface compaction.  Therefore it is necessary to aerate as often as possible.

The greens have been verti cut and brushed on several occasions in June.  This reduces the build up of thatch and promotes a cleaner cut.  A liquid feed has been applied to stimulate healthy growth and support the plants natural defence.  This was tank mixed with a biostimulant to assist the plant against stress.

The tees have been sprayed with a selective herbicide and I am waiting for an opportunity  to spray the remaining  fairways and semi rough, fairways 1-4, 14-18 have received an application of weed killer so far.

We have a new irrigation control panel, it has been replaced at virtually no cost to the club.  The greens have benefitted from several night time applications since the installation.  Certain greens do require a little hand watering for some localised dry spots.  With this in mind a wetting agent has been applied.

Finally some areas remain GUR on the course.  The area on the second hill was overseeded but unfortunately had no germination.  We shall reseed the area.  Also the mound on the 16th fairway will be topped with hollow core plugs from the same fairway.  This will enable it to blend in and will be completed at the end of the summer.
